10 Significant Challenges Doctors Will Face in 2015

The American Medical Association identified the following ten significant challenges for 2015:

  1. The money and time needed for administrative and regulatory requirements. 
    • Many physicians find EHR useless and deem the meaningful use requirements unattainable. More than 50% of eligible professionals will be penalized due to failure to fulfill meaningful use.
    • ICD-10 implementation (as of October 1, 2015) has 68,000 codes, as opposed to the former 13,000 diagnosis codes in ICD-9.
    • Prior authorization rules hinder the care delivery process and place administrative and financial burdens on physicians.
    • Federal fraud and abuse programs are hounding physicians via the efforts of Medicare recovery audit contractors (RAC).
  2. The Medicare physician payment system will have a 21% decrease in physicians’ pay come April 1st due to the sustainable growth rate.
  3. Health insurers do not offer adequate provider networks to their consumers, and as a result it has necessitated physician action to ensure patients have access to the care they need.
  4. The country’s high rate of prescriptions overdose should be addressed through treatment, prevention and education rather than law enforcement.
  5. The chronic diseases of Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease need to be eliminated.
  6. It will be essential that physicians are constantly updated on their knowledge of technology as new innovations will be consistently emerging throughout the year.
  7. Undergrad medical education will be focusing on more innovative ideas for medical student training, and the best practices will be implemented in schools.
  8. The draft for the new modernized American Medical Association’s Code of Medical Ethics will be released this year.
  9. Physicians will have access to tools that will help them improve their professional satisfaction and their quality of patient care.
  10. The Supreme Court of the U.S. will continue to play a significant role in healthcare.
