7 Recommendations for Easing the ICD-10 Transition
/The following are some suggestions from Carl Natale of ICD10Watch to prepare for the upcoming ICD-10 transition:
- Do not overbook yourself the last week of September, so that your staff will not be overwhelmed with the new ICD-10 codes.
- Keep a cheat sheet for common diagnoses.
- It is recommended that practices do 1 to 2 hours per week of dual coding to better acclimate the coders to the transition.
- Practices need to update their healthcare payer contracts so that they are aware of how they will be reimbursed for ICD-10 codes.
- It is important to identify who is documenting and recording medical codes.
- One must understand his or her financials to observe how ICD-10 is impacting his or her practice (especially look at your payer mix, accounts receivable cycle and denied claims).
- Retain your current coders and keep them satisfied.
