80% of Health IT Leaders Claim Their Systems have been Compromised

According to KPMG, 81% of health IT leaders (223 executives were surveyed) say that their provider or insurance organizations have been victims of a cyberattack in the past 2 years. Forbes Insight conducted the survey for KPMG, questioning 161 providers and 101 health plans.

The three most common types of attack were malware at 65%, botnets at 25%, and internal sources at 26%. Michael Ebert, head of KPMG’s health and life sciences cyber practice, suggests that healthcare industry leaders make a 3 to 5 year commitment to improve cybersecurity. Fortunately, the talent pool for information security experts is increasing, as some universities, such as Temple, Drexel, Rutgers and Penn State, are developing data security programs.
