According to the Washington Post, the American Heart Association issued a warning to physicians after a large increase in the number of imaging tests that expose patients to radiation. The AHA states, “Nearly 40 percent of all medical imaging radiation experienced by American patients comes from tests pertaining to cardiovascular health.”

The organization claims, “Studies have consistently shown a lack of adequate awareness among physicians of basic concepts related to radiation exposure from medical imaging."

However, when appropriately used, the clinical benefits of the tests “always outweigh any potential risks related to radiation exposure given the risks of most cardiovascular diseases.”
