Do Americans Trust Doctors?
/Americans attitudes towards their physicians are becoming increasingly negative. The U.S. earned 3rd place out of 29 countries surveyed for satisfactory medical care (beaten by Switzerland and Denmark). Surprisingly, according to the same survey, the U.S. ranked 24th when citizens were asked if doctors in the U.S. can be trusted.
An article in the New England Journal of Medicine speculated that the skeptical attitude towards physicians might be linked to the politics and media coverage. Hospitals and clinicians have a substantial amount of autonomy within the system, and therefore issues within the healthcare system are not just blamed on the government but also the providers. The discontent in the U.S. population about healthcare may also be attributed to its escalating prices.
