Another ICD-10 Delay?

The American Medical Association (AMA) is urging its members to write Congress requesting a 2-year ICD-10 delay. The AMA wants to delay the implementation of ICD-10 during the lame duck session.

According to Politico, if they are not able to obtain the delay, the medical societies could lobby to include the ICD-10 delay in the Medical Sustainable Growth Rate legislation in the first few months of 2015.

Advocates for the maintaining the current launch date of October 2015 for the ICD-10 implementation claim that another delay would be costly and result in an outdated clinical documentation system for healthcare. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) started a twitter campaign of #ICD10Matters to prevent lawmakers to not delay the start date again.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimated that the most recent one-year delay of the ICD-10 implementation cost the healthcare system $6.8 billion.
