Athenahealth Buys Beth Israel EHR for Access to Inpatient Market
/Athenahealth purchased WebOMR, Beth Israel Deaconess' cloud-based, stage 2-certified EHR. WebOMR is 30-years-old and one of the first hospital-built inpatient and outpatient EHRs, and the first self-built EHR system to achieve meaningful use. Beth Israel will retain its licensing rights to WebOMR for the next 20 years, but it will make five of its EHR developers accessible to Athenahealth, as it aims to develop products based on WebOMR. Once Athenahealth pays BIDHC for WebOMR, the hospital will be a paid Athenahealth subscriber, and the combined venture will be called Athena Clinicals Enterprise.
Purchasing the WebOMR software was a significant move for Athenahealth, as it moves into the inpatient EHR industry. Athenahealth is quickly evolving, especially after its purchase in January of the start-up, RazorInsights, to move into the 50 bed and under sector, which accounts for 1/3rd of all hospitals in the U.S.
