California Joins on the Open Data Movement

California public health leaders are joining an open data movement that encourages people to identify the gaps and fix the issues in the data of California's public and private health care systems.
In the past, California officials had concerns about publishing data online because of the risk of exposing individuals' medical records. However, these worries subsided after witnessing New York's successful implementation of its open data portal.
The Open Data Portal is currently available on the website for the California Department of Public Health. The portal provides additional information to help people make more educated health care decisions. The guide for revealing data on hospital patient outcomes is derived from the Affordable Care Act, which requires Medicare and Medicaid to post ratings of hospital safety and performance. Some of the data in the open portal includes newborn screening disorders, birth weights and mother's age by zip code.
