FHIR Could be the Key to Unlocking Interoperability

FHIR, Fast Health Interoperability Resources, is an open data interoperability standard that is a key component of the Shared Nationwide Interoperability Roadmap released in January by the Office of the National Coordinator. Eventually, organizations that use FHIR will be able to communicate current data across different systems to enhance care coordination.

FHIR is currently in the first version as a Draft Standard for Trial Use, which means providers and vendors can test it out (there are already 25 to 30 organizations signed up). At some point in the next 2 months, a specification and implementation guide for FHIR API and the corresponding security profile will be released so that people can begin implementing.
