Healthcare Needs Common Interoperability Standards, Period

Karen DeSalvo, National Coordinator for Health IT, claims that a common set of standards would have improved the current state of interoperability. DeSalvo believes that in hindsight standardization would have allowed for more seamless sharing of basic health information. Nonetheless, she recognizes and applauds the successes that HITECH has achieved.

Meanwhile, Jitin Asnaani, CommonWell Executive Director, does not believe that building standards translates to interoperability because someone still has to manage the process of operations. The process of setting standards needs to be collaborative. Marianne Yeager, CEO of Sequoia Project, agrees that standards cannot be set by one organization to speak to the needs of the entire industry.
