Currently, the healthcare IT industry is concentrated on the concept of interoperability. The institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers defines interoperability as, “The ability of two or more systems or components to exchange information and to use the information that has been exchanged.” Ideally, healthcare IT would like to standardized the exchange of Electronic Health Record (EHR) across systems to allow for immediate availability of health information.

Dr. Edmund Billings, believes that interoperability can only occur with open APIs (application program interface) working unrestricted within a free market economy. Billings wants EHR platforms to open their APIs to increase data accessibility.

There have been government initiatives focused on standardizing EHR. For example, Meaningful Use distributes monetary initiatives to healthcare practitioners who use EHR technology.
