Managing the Impact of ICD-10 on DME Billing
/Many practices are racing to meet the ICD-10 deadline and making sure that their billing is done correctly. It is imperative to continue improving documentation for DME billing in order to support quality patient care and even increase revenue. If for any reason DME’s cannot make the necessary system changes to submit claims with ICD–10 codes by October 1st, then they can use the free billing software provided by CEDI which is PC-ACE Pro 32. The software download is free with variable fees to submit claims through a network service vendor. While it does not provide coding assistance, it does provide DME’s with an ICD–10 complaint claims submission format for all Medicare claims.
In order to ensure a smooth transition for DME billing with the ICD-10 transition, DME billing teams should map out the 10 top ICD–9 codes which are billed regularly and map out the ICD–10 codes accordingly. To begin with, documentation of patients currently receiving treatment should be completed per new ICD codes as of October 1.
In addition, DMEs should discuss ICD-10 with their software vendors to ensure that they are taking the necessary actions to meet requirements. Lastly, DMEs should get assistance from medical billing companies to help them streamline their ICD-10 implementation in order to avoid any revenue loss. These billing companies assure a seamless ICD-9 to ICD-10 transition and can help practices stay on track as per standard CMS requirements.
