HealthcareDive reports that according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, only “78 hospitals nationwide have met Stage 2 Meaningful Use reporting requirements for their electronic health records.” In order for hospitals to take advantage of the federal financial incentives, all of the requirements must be met. Many hospitals are claiming that external providers are the main reason they cannot meet the requirements, however. As a response, “CMS has extended deadlines for Stage 2 requirements to 2016 and Stage 3 reporting in 2017.”

Healthcare Dive believes that CMS anticipated the difficulty of meeting the Meaningful Use requirements from the beginning, and has taken countless actions to assist hospitals. “Moving forward with Stage 2 appears to be a challenge, but it’s obviously not unattainable.”
