Medical Informatics Engineering Leaves 3.9 Million Patients Exposed after Breach

Medical Informatics Engineering, a medical software company located in Fort Wayne, Indiana announced that they were hacked on June 10th. 3.9 million people nationwide had their information exposed the company told the federal government. This security breach adds to the growing list of companies who have had their software systems compromised.

According to NBC News, names, addresses, birthdates, Social Security numbers and health records were all stolen from patients of Texas-based Concentra, which operates more than 300 medical centers in 38 states; Franciscan St. Francis Health Indianapolis; and Rochester Medical Group in the Detroit area.

The health care industry is currently concentrating on reducing the vulnerability of protected health information (PHI). HIPAA is being reviewed to consider the inclusion of a required encryption of all PHI. As the law stands now, encryption is "addressable," which means that it should be done whenever applicable. According to a report by Forrester Research, 41% of healthcare providers do not encrypt their data.
