Medical Students are Finally Taking Classes in Healthcare Costs

Insurance costs and deductible amounts are becoming increasingly more expensive, forcing physicians to consider the financial burden of patients. Medical schools are now requiring their students to take a course in the cost and value of services.

According to a survey by the Association of American Medical Colleges, 129 of 140 medical schools required a course on the cost of healthcare for the 2013-14 academic year. Some medical students are annoyed by the requirement because they are already obliged to master so many other skills. Patients are more concerned with healthcare costs because they are now being held more responsible for them, causing the patients to sometimes forgo treatment.
