Who Owns EHR Patient Data?
/It is not easy to say who owns patient data in an EHR because patient data is no longer confined to paper chart, but rather documented in the cloud. Physicians are now encouraged to transition away from the idea of data ownership. However, physicians are wary of this concept and their relationships with EHR vendors who have access and control over patient data. Frequently, physicians give their EHR vendors arguably too many data rights by not addressing them when negotiating the contract. It is important that medical practices make sure they address data rights with their EHR vendors.
