As the average patient becomes older, diagnosing them becomes increasingly difficult. Sleep-deprived residents must handle these complex cases in an academic setting that provides them little praise or feedback of their performance.
Ironically, the medical field does very little to attend to the mental health needs of physicians. According to the article, the most common cause of death for physicians under 35 is suicide. Many physicians are perfectionists and medical culture “implies you should strive to be perfect even though you’re human.”
Physician burnout is a serious problem that can cause doctors to underperform and have costly mistakes.
