It's Tax Season, Which Means Tax Scam Season

Tax scams have been alarmingly on the rise. In December 2014, federal consumer protection officials had approximately 6,500 complaints of IRS imposters. In July 2013, this number was only at 94 complains. The IRS identified some clues it has seen as a pattern nationally regarding these scam callers:Callers are insulting or hostile to scare their potential victims

  • Potential victims may be told they are entitled to refunds or that they owe money that must be immediately paid to the IRS (if unsuccessful phone scammers will sometimes call back with a new strategy)
  • Scammers use fake names that are common and fake IRS badge numbers.
  • The IRS always sends notices of unpaid taxes via U.S. mail and will never ask for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the phone.
