With the implementation of ICD-10 beginning in October of next year, doctors need to begin transitioning to the new medical coding system. EHR Intelligence interviewed Erik Newlin, the vice president of EDI Platform & Compliance at Xerox, to find out the most effective way to do so.

Physicians must revaluate their implementation strategy to make sure they can meet the needs of ICD-10 implementation.

Newlin stresses the importance of updating infrastructure. He states, “You don’t want to find yourself sitting here in March and find out, ‘Oh my God, I need something new physically in-hand,’ because you’re not going to be able to rectify that issue in a day or two.”

It is also important for physicians to ensure both their technological providers and staffing are sufficient and performing adequately.

Additionally, physicians should begin testing the new system as soon as possible.
