Tufts Medical Center and Boston Medical Center are exploring the idea of a partnership. In October, Tufts Medical Center announced a newly created health system with Mass. General Hospital.

Tufts market share was stagnant at 3% from 2007-2011, while Boston Medical center declined from just above 6% to just under 5%. The two medical centers compete with Partners HealthCare, which is the largest health system in Massachusetts. Furthermore, Tufts Medical Center ended last year with an operating income of $13.8 million and a revenue of $866.3 million, while Boston Medical Center ended with an operating income of $7 million with a revenue of $1 billion.

Massachusetts’s Health Policy Commission has not received notice of a deal yet (it must have 60 days notice prior to a merge).
