U.S. Chief Technology Officer To Step Down, Oversaw Healthcare.gov Relaunch

Fortune's Dan Primack is reporting that U.S. Chief Technology Officer Todd Park will step down from the position by the end of the year.  Primack notes that Park's decision to leave the post was due to his family's desire to move back to the west coast.

Park is most famous for starting healthcare IT companies AthenaHealth and Castlight.  Primack notes that Park "won early praise for his 90-day development of the initial Healthcare.gov rollout, and in 2012 was picked by President Obama to replace Aneesh Chopra as U.S. CTO." After Healthcare.gov's  disastrous rollout, he oversaw the relaunch to the repaired website.

From Silicon Valley, Park will now focus on recruiting top tier tech talent to fill government roles. Primack gives an example of Park's new role, "he helped hire former Google executive Mikey Dickerson to help identify and fix government websites." There is no word who will replace Park as U.S. CTO, but many believe the replacement will be from a company like Google or LinkedIn.

Park stepping down comes at a time when healthcare IT is front page news with the recent developments of Community Health's security breach. The need for strong health IT personnel in the public and private sectors has never been more critical. Providers need to embrace the security measures that come with these new technologies as healthcare continues its technological overhaul.
