Upcoding Can Lead To Erroneous Charges For Patients
/A sometimes overlooked flaw in the insurance billing process is that of improper billing to medical care, known as upcoding. Eric David discusses such an issue in his recent article published in the Wall Street Journal. After examining the bill for his son’s trip to the ER, David discovered half of the $20,000 bill he received was erroneously charged to him for a service that was neither required nor adequately delivered. Even though he is trained as both a lawyer and physician, the process to correct this error was both difficult and time-consuming.
As David puts it, one reason for uprooting is the disconnection between those who decide what patients are billed for and actual physicians. The article serves as an examination of one area of the healthcare system that requires improvement and more input from doctors.
