Harvard business professor, Regina Herzlinger, recently detailed her vision for a healthcare website aimed at consumers shopping for health care services and insurances. The site would combine data from a variety of objective third-party sources to provide consumers with information on a variety of areas relating to health care, including managing a health savings account, choosing a health insurance policy, and selecting a doctor.
Patients are facing major obstacles in accessing transparent health care information in order to make better decisions on health plans and treatments. Insurance companies typically give information that is naturally flawed since they are incentivized to only provide information that is advantageous to its business.
On Herzlinger’s website, consumers would have access to their medical record, to benefits information, to medical data, and data on their personal health savings account. The site would offer updated information on healthcare services, places where consumers can get treatment for certain conditions, and doctors who can give second opinions to give patients peace of mind. Ultimately the site offers a “one-stop shopping system" that helps patients visualize prices for different health plans and that increases access to pertinent information so that consumers can make more informed decisions.
