Telemedicine Will Continue to Grow According to Ochsner Health System CEO

Ochsner Health Systems, based in New Orleans, is one of the most successful group practices in the world. It was established by 5 former Tulane University surgeons and now employs more than 1,000 physicians. Warner Thomas, CEO of Oschner Health System, discusses the system in New Orleans.

Oschner Health System began its major expansion in 2006 by purchasing three hospitals from Tenet Healthcare after hurricane Katrina. It attracts patients from around the world because of its services in transplants, heart care, cancer care, neurosciences, and pediatrics. It is perhaps best known for its linkage of smoking to lung cancer and operation to separate conjoined twins. Moreover, the system aims to ensure that it has the best talent, capabilities and access to services.

In June, the Oschner Health Network was launched and aims to collaborate on a number of different initiatives, including the construction of a clinical data analytics capability. Moreover, Oschner’s telemedicine program includes 42 hospitals, and expects to do about 17,000 telemedicine consults with other hospitals this year. Lastly, Oschner also has a 24/7, 365- day virtual monitoring of all its ICU patients that totals 193 beds.
