Message to ONC: Ease the Administrative Burden on Physicians
/In December, the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) released its Federal Health IT Strategic Plan. The plan outlines the following five goals that it hopes to achieve during the 2015 to 2020 period:
1. Expand health IT adoption
2. Advance secure and interoperable health IT
3. Strengthen health care delivery
4. Advance the health of communities
5. Advance research, scientific knowledge, and innovation
The American Association of Family Physicians (AAFP) responded to the ONC for Health IT’S strategic plan by stating, “Ease the administrative burden physicians face and built on goals set a decade ago.” AAFP Board Chair, Dr. Reid Blackwelder, claims that the ONC’s goals of collecting and sharing health information are indistinguishable from those of the previous decade, and that the ONC should focus its attention on patient health management, care coordination, and patient engagement.
